SERVICE PERSON OF THE MONTH-NC

06/16/2016 By swentzlaff

Branch: Army National Guard
Unit: 440th North Carolina Army Band
Rank: Sergeant (SGT)

Amy was baptized in a Church of the Lutheran Confession (CLC) church in Okabena, MN, in August of 1990 and grew up in various CLC churches throughout the Midwest.  In 2011, she joined the South Dakota Army National Guard as a clarinetist and attended Basic Combat Training at Fort Sill, Oklahoma.  She completed her Advanced Individualized Training at the Army School of Music in Virginia where she met her husband Shawn, who is currently serving as a musician in the United States Marine Corps.  After training, she returned to Northern State University in Aberdeen, SD, to finish her degree in Music Education.  In May of 2013, Amy made the life-changing decision to move to North Carolina, where Shawn was serving in the USMC 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing Band.  She transferred from the 147th South Dakota Army National Guard Band to the 440th North Carolina Army National Guard Band.  Shawn and Amy were married at WELS Ascension Lutheran Church in Jacksonville, NC, on November 23, 2013, by Pastor Stephen Schmidt and became members of the WELS shortly after.  When Shawn received orders to transfer to the Quantico USMC Band in September of 2015, Amy and Shawn bought a home in Stafford, VA.  Amy recently signed an extension to continue serving her country with the 440th North Carolina Army Band.  She leads a vocal ensemble, sings lead and backup for the rock band, and participates in various ceremonial events with her clarinet.  Amy is very proud to be a member of the United States Army AND have the honor of being a proud USMC spouse!
