Prayers for 9/11

PRAYER OF REMEMBRANCE FOR 9/11/01 “A Strong Tower”

M: Hear our cry, O God; listen to our prayer.
C:  We call to you when our hearts grow faint when danger threatens, and
human efforts fail.
M: We have learned that evil can penetrate our defenses, and attack both our heartland and our hearts.
C: We run for refuge under the shelter of your wings.
M: We long to dwell under your protection all the days of our lives.
C: Appoint your love and faithfulness to protect us.
M:  Steel and concrete, missiles and money, cannot provide safety and
soundness.
C:  Only you can lift us up above danger. Only you can be the strong tower to save us.

(Special prayers and intercessions may follow.)

M:   Hear us, Lord, as we bring you our private petitions.

(Silent prayer.)

M:   To you, O Lord, we bring our thanks and our requests.
C:  Hear our prayers for Jesus’ sake.  Amen.

Reflections from Psalm 61:1-8

Hear my cry, O God; listen to my prayer. From the ends of the earth, I call to you, I call as my heart grows faint; lead me to the rock that is higher than I.

For you have been my refuge, a strong tower against the foe. I long to dwell in your tent forever and take refuge in the shelter of your wings.

For you, God, have heard my vows; you have given me the heritage of those who fear your name.

Increase the days of the king’s life, his years for many generations. May he be enthroned in God’s presence forever; appoint your love and faithfulness to protect him. Then I will ever sing in praise of your name and fulfill my vows day after day.

PRAYER OF REMEMBRANCE FOR 9/11—For Those in Harm’s Way

M: Lord of the Nations, men, and women in uniform remain in harm’s way even though key leaders who applauded the 9/11 attack have been removed from this earth.

C:  We pray for those who guard our nation in distant and dangerous places.
M: War has separated families. Children ask why their mother or father cannot tuck them into bed at night—why they have to be so far away.
C: Provide for their security, reassure their troubled minds, and remind them that your power and protection reach to the other side of the world.
M: Parents and spouses wait for the safe return of their loved one with strained
patience.
C: Point them to the Savior’s cross. Remind them of the great love you
have for them.
M:  Lord, you have said, “Be still, and know that I am God.”
C:  Grant that the assurance of your love and protection through faith in Jesus may quiet the fears and bring forth confidence and peace.

(Special prayers and intercessions may follow.)

M:   Hear us, Lord, as we bring you our private petitions.
(Silent prayer.)

M:   To you, O Lord, we bring our thanks and our requests.

C:  Hear our prayers for Jesus’ sake.  Amen.

PRAYER OF REMEMBRANCE FOR 9/11/01
“Where is God?”

M: The enemies saw the billowing smoke and crumbling towers and asked of
Americans, “Where is their God?”

C:  We answer with the words of God’s people of old: “Our God is in heaven; he does whatever pleases him.”

M: Doubters ask, “Why would God be pleased to allow such death and
destruction to occur?”

C: Lord, we know that you are holy, that you judge evil, but you offer forgiveness and salvation to everyone on earth.

M: We confess to you our personal sins and our national sins. We admit that
we deserve only death and destruction.

C: Thus we pray, “Lord, have mercy on us and our nation!”

M:  Remember us in mercy, O LORD God. Be always our help and shield.
Remember us, and bless us.

C:  May the LORD cause us to flourish, both us and our children. May we be blessed by the LORD, the Maker of heaven and earth

(Special prayers and intercessions may follow.)

M:   Hear us, Lord, as we bring you our private petitions.
(Silent prayer.)
M:   To you, O Lord, we bring our thanks and our requests.

C:  Hear our prayers for Jesus’ sake.  Amen.

Reflections from Psalm 115

Not to us, Lord, not to us
but to your name be the glory,
because of your love and faithfulness.

Why do the nations say,
    “Where is their God?”
Our God is in heaven;
    he does whatever pleases him.
But their idols are silver and gold,
    made by human hands.
They have mouths, but cannot speak,
    eyes, but cannot see.
They have ears, but cannot hear,
    noses, but cannot smell.
They have hands, but cannot feel,
    feet, but cannot walk,
nor can they utter a sound with their throats.
Those who make them will be like them,
and so will all who trust in them.

All you Israelites, trust in the Lord
he is their help and shield.
House of Aaron, trust in the Lord
he is their help and shield.
You who fear him, trust in the Lord
he is their help and shield.

The Lord remembers us and will bless us:
He will bless his people Israel,
he will bless the house of Aaron,
he will bless those who fear the Lord
    small and great alike.

May the Lord cause you to flourish,
    both you and your children.
May you be blessed by the Lord,
the Maker of heaven and earth.

The highest heavens belong to the Lord,
but the earth he has given to mankind.
It is not the dead who praise the Lord,
    those who go down to the place of silence;
it is we who extol the Lord,
    both now and forevermore.
